How can I keep deer from eating my roses?

This is a constant problem once the deer find that you have a buffet line that they can pass through at least once a week. The solution to this problem must be solved with several methods. I have not found that one solution works because when the deer are hungry they keep coming around looking for ways to munch at the buffet. The following are practices that when combined will deter the deer for awhile and then you may need to change your tactics again.

  • Apply a deterrent spray material such as "Deer Away."
  • Place coyote urine in vials along the rose garden.
  • Place hardware cloth in the rose bed. (the deer do not like the feel of the material).
  • Place fishing wire around the flower gardens. (deer cannot see the wire and this spooks the deer).
  • Put an electric fence around your property that is about 8 feet tall.
  • Build a chain link fence that is 12 feet high. (the deer will jump a 10 foot fence)
  • Hire Elmer Fudd landscaping company.

The latter recommendations should be implemented as a last resort.
